New Diocese Website

In case you hadn’t noticed, the Diocese of Dublin and Glendalough have recently released a new design for their website. It’s worth a look if you’re interested in that kind of thing - and is (as it ever was) an excellent source of news from around the diocese

Christ Church Choir Gap Year Opportunities

The music department of Christ Church Cathedral Dublin have recently launched a new Gap Year Placement Scheme, for pre and post university students.

The scheme offers a generous package of accommodation, tuition, and a maintenance grant - and is an excellent way for young men and women to gain experience singing in a cathedral choir; either before taking up a choral scholarship at college, or to further their musical career after graduation.

The choir at Christ Church already has a number of singers from a collegiate background, and also offers choral scholarships to singers studying in Dublin. It is also the only Anglican cathedral in the UK and Ireland that offers professional singing opportunities to women.

For more information about the scheme, please feel free to download the following leaflet, and email the Director of Music for more information.

Give it up for Lent

With Ash Wednesday fast approaching next week, I’m trying to decide on what to give up for Lent.

In recent years I’ve given up alcohol and caffeine - both of which have been quite hard to do, particularly the caffeine one. And a few years back I took up something for Lent: being completely honest with people. But that one turned out to be a bit of a disaster, and almost lost me some friends.

This year, for some reason, I don’t think I want to give up the booze. But I guess I can still cut down. I might try the caffeine thing, which will be okay as long as I can get past the week-long cold turkey of headaches, shaking, and sleepiness.

I’ve also decided that I’m going back on a diet. I’ve let my weight creep up over recent months, and really need to do something about it. And a daily calorie allowance will help me limit the alcohol consumption (because, when it comes down to it, food based calories are always better than liquid based ones).

Not in my name

Just in case you’ve been following the unholy row erupting in the media lately surrounding the sale of rosary beads in St Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin and a proposed visit by the Pope to Northern Ireland, then I would like to say - as a Protestant Anglican myself - that Wallace Thompson and the Evangelical Protestant Society he represents do NOT speak for me. As far as I’m concerned, his recent anti-Catholic rants have embarrassed all Christian people, and he should apologise (and hopefully resign) immediately. This kind of bigotry has no place in our society.
