Alarm!

The fire alarm went off at about 11.30pm, and within a few moments people were coming out of their apartments to see what was happening. Some were fully clothed, but others were already dressed for bed, and all were somewhat disturbed at the prospect of a fire in the apartment block.

I joined the small gathering round the alarm control panel, while one of my neighbours phoned the management company for advice. Someone went to the 2nd floor - as indicated on the alarm display - to check for signs of something wrong, but returned to say that nothing looked amiss.

With no obvious signs of fire, the advice from the management company was to reset the alarm, which we did. And when the alarms were silenced, people quickly dispersed and returned to their homes.

The whole incident lasted no more than five minutes from beginning to end, but within those few short minutes I met and talked to more of my neighbours than in the whole of the previous eight months combined. Strange what brings people together.

Holy Saturday Batman

There truly is a page on the internet for every subject you might want to know about.

I was just updating my facebook status this morning to include the phrase Holy Saturday Batman - based on the fact that today’s called Holy Saturday in the liturgical calendar - but also with a gentle nod towards the classic 1960s TV show Batman.

Anyway, so someone asked me what the reference meant, and I was finding it quite difficult to explain Robin’s famous Holy *something* Batman catchphrases from the series. That is until I found a complete list of the expressions he used on the internet:

Productivity Leap

The impending start of my new day job on Monday has rather focussed my mind. All those little jobs, that I’ve hitherto been putting off, now have to fit within the last few remaining days of freedom. And so, overnight, I’ve suddenly become rather busy.

I’ll not bore you with the various jobs that I’ve got to complete, but yesterday I ended up doing a 12-hour day - from 10.00am to midnight - with only a two hour break in the middle to share a cup of tea with a friend and grab some dinner.

I’m certainly not used to this level of activity. Indeed for the last few weeks, I’ve managed to loose most of the day watching trashy daytime TV shows. And any jobs that have needed doing have taken about 3-4 times as long as usual, if they’ve even been done at all.

I guess the old saying holds true; that if you want something doing, then always ask a busy person. Because, with too much time on your hands, you become awfully unproductive. A simple task like doing laundry can (including extended procrastination time) expand to last all day; so that you end up getting very little done.

Face Fuzz

Fuzzy FaceIt all got a bit too itchy last night, so I shaved it off. However within just 12 days I had managed to grow quite an impressive amount of face fuzz.

It hadn’t been a planned thing. I had gone away for New Year, and had simply forgotten to pack my razor. And being a bit of tight-arsed penny pincher, I resisted the urge to buy a new one. So while I was away I let it grow - and then came back to Dublin and let it continue, to see if I liked it.

I must admit, there was rather too much grey in the beard for my liking. And with some (albeit well-meaning) comments from friends saying I looked ‘distinguished’, I felt it made me look even older than I normally do. Of course some other so-called friends also said that I looked like an axe-murderer - which wasn’t what I was hoping for either.

Anyway, so the beard has gone. I got home last night and realised that I had been scratching at my chin all evening. I had thought that if I just left it grow a bit longer the itching would stop, but it appeared to get worse over time. And so it went.

Such a perfect day

Today was a very good day. Everything seemed to fall into place. The music at the cathedral all went well, and my parents arrived bang on schedule at lunchtime. I also had a great time in the pub after evensong, and I had my dinner cooked for me. If only every day went so smoothly.
